Upper Yard Buildings
The Newt in Somerset is the result of a unique collaboration between a large number of designers, craftsmen and suppliers. Working with the client, benjamin+beauchamp architects were responsible for the Master Planning and design of the Garden Visitor buildings, construction of the Energy Centre, replacement Estate buildings and the conversion of the Old Stable Yard buildings to hotel rooms.
The Upper Yard Buildings enclose an informal courtyard to the west of the main house. The original uses include a stables, an Estate Managers House, a range of storage buildings and a free standing Granary. All of these buildings were constructed between 1785 and 1830 and are Listed Grade II. At the outset of the project these buildings (with the exception of the house) were in need of repairs to their fabric and were unoccupied. Our proposals sought to bring the buildings back into uses which were viable in the long term as part of reinvigoration of the entire Estate as a visitor destination.
