The conversion and repair of a C18 Model Farm into an Art Gallery. b2 architects worked as part of an international design team for Hauser and Wirth Somerset leading on the conservation of the existing farmhouse. Following repair and alterations, including the retention of many layers of history, several artists contributed towards the presentation and unique interior design.
Other alterations on the site include a new restaurant within the former cow shed, offices within the stables and an education centre from the original cart sheds and the creation of two main new gallery exhibition spaces grouped around a central courtyard. The whole is carefully positioned around the existing farm yard which has been sensitively modified and re-landscaped for its new purpose but maintains its distinct agricultural character. A new garden was designed by Piet Oudolf and now hosts the 2015 Serpentine Gallery summer installation.
The new galleries form part of a visitor attraction which was opened in 2014 and has proved very popular significantly exceeding anticipated visitor numbers.
